This course combines B2-level English lessons with B2 First Certificate exam preparation.
The course provides students with the necessary tools to communicate and handle the main structures of the language with some confidence, as well as to demonstrate knowledge of a wide range of vocabulary and use of the appropriate communicative strategies in a variety of social situations.
On finishing the course, students will be able to understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. They will also interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Students will also produce clear, detailed texts on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue.
During the course students learn how to define, and give additional information about, an object or a person, add and obtain information in formal contexts, ask for and give opinions, make deductions about the past, express regret about past actions and connect ideas. They also study how to ask for and give permission, discuss abilities and impossible facts in the present which were caused by an incomplete condition in the past, report commands and questions, explain a cause, express purpose, discuss different religions and describe a process. In addition, students learn different language functions such as: expressing quantity, shopping in a supermarket, giving orders, describing ability, expressing obligation, lack of obligation, future possibility and purpose as well as giving advice, offering to do something, making promises, suggestions, offers and polite questions.
The following vocabulary topics are covered in this course: ecology, the environment, news, politics, connectors, education, teaching and learning, college course subjects, learning techniques, health, nutrition, eating healthily, beliefs and religions, locations and geographic denominations, the theatre, science, parts of the body, family resemblance, good luck charms and superstitions, fruit and vegetables, films, modelling, machines and machinery, agriculture, mining and industry, personal appearance and location, vehicles and driving, spaces and places, parapsychology, horoscopes, urban places of interest, light and colour, artistic and photographic terms. Students also learn idioms, specific terminology for letter writing and contracts and differences in British and American English.
Moreover, in this course students learn vocabulary and specific expressions related to first aid, going to the hospital, the chemist’s and the optician's and going to a jeweller's. In addition, students learn specific vocabulary related to business. All these lessons include a series of typical situations and dialogues that help students contextualise and learn the target vocabulary by heart. Students practise all the language skills: writing, speaking, listening and reading through a series of interactive, contextualised exercises. They learn through real life dialogues, word/sentence – picture association and video dubbing among other types of exercises. The last lesson of each unit has test exercises so that students can monitor their own progress.
After the B2-level English lessons, the course provides six examination papers for the Upper-Intermediate level exam. These papers allow candidates to practise and become familiar with the exam format. Each paper is made up of four parts, designed to test the key language skills. The four parts are: Reading and Use of English, Writing, Listening and Speaking.
